John Dickson Carr war ein hochgepriesener US-amerikanischer Autor, geboren in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, im Jahr 1906. Bekannt ist er vor allem für seine Beiträge zum Genre der Krimi- und Detektivliteratur, wobei er unter den Pseudonymen Carter Dickson, Carr Dickson und Roger Fairbairn schrieb. Carrs erstes veröffentlichtes Kriminalroman, "It Walks by Night" mit dem Franzosen Henri Bencolin, wurde 1930 veröffentlicht. Dies markierte den Beginn einer produktiven Schreibkarriere, die über mehrere Jahrzehnte andauerte und zahlreiche geliebte Krimiserien hervorbrachte.
Carr gilt allgemein als einer der größten Krimiautoren der Goldenen Ära, bekannt für seine vertrackten Handlungsstränge und scheinbar unmöglichen Mysterien. Seine Detektive, darunter die berühmten Dr. Gideon Fell und Sir Henry Merrivale, wurden für ihre Fähigkeit gefeiert, auch die rätselhaftesten Fälle zu lösen. Obwohl Carr ein US-amerikanischer Autor war, verbrachte er mehrere Jahre seines Lebens in England und verlegte den Großteil seiner Romane an englische Schauplätze, wie Dorfschaften und Herrenhäuser. Das, zusammen mit seiner Meisterschaft des Genres, hat häufige Vergleiche zwischen Carr und seinen britischen Zeitgenossen zur Folge.
Im Laufe seiner Karriere erhielt Carr zahlreiche Auszeichnungen für sein Werk. Er gewann zwei Edgar-Preise, einen für seinen Roman "The Hollow Man" im Jahr 1940 und einen anderen für sein Sachbuch "The Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" im Jahr 1949. 1963 wurde Carr mit dem Grand Master Award von den Mystery Writers of America ausgezeichnet, wodurch seine bedeutenden Beiträge zum Genre gewürdigt wurden.
