Ian Rankin ist ein hoch gelobter schottischer Autor, der vor allem für seine Kriminalromane bekannt ist. Obwohl das Krimi-Genre nicht immer sein endgültiges Berufsziel war, ist er zu einem der erfolgreichsten und angesehensten Autoren in diesem Genre geworden. Rankin ist insbesondere für seine Inspector Rebus-Reihe bekannt, die in der Stadt Edinburgh spielt.
Rankin wurde 1960 im Königreich Fife geboren und studierte an der Universität Edinburgh, wo er 1982 abschloss. Er plante ursprünglich, einen PhD in Schottischer Literatur zu verfolgen, entschied sich jedoch stattdessen für drei Jahre des Schreibens von Romanen. Sein erster Rebus-Roman wurde 1987 veröffentlicht und die Reihe wurde seitdem in 22 Sprachen übersetzt und ist in mehreren Ländern ein Bestseller geworden.
Neben seinem Erfolg mit der Rebus-Reihe hat Rankin zahlreiche literarische Auszeichnungen gewonnen und wurde zum Hawthornden Fellow gewählt. Er hat auch zwei Dagger Awards für die beste Kurzgeschichte des Jahres und den Gold Dagger for Fiction erhalten. Rankin wurde mit Ehrendoktorwürden von den Universitäten Abertay, St Andrews und Edinburgh ausgezeichnet. Er hat auch für die BBC2-Sendung Newsnight Review beigetragen und seine eigene TV-Serie, Ian Rankin's Evil Thoughts, auf Channel 4 präsentiert. Im Jahr 2002. Rankin wurde der OBE für Verdienste um die Literatur verliehen, die er in seiner Heimatstadt Edinburgh, wo er derzeit mit seinem Partner und zwei Söhnen lebt, entgegennahm.
Bevor Rankin ein erfolgreicher Autor wurde, hatte er in seinen frühen Zwanzigern eine Reihe von Jobs, darunter Traubenpflücken, Steuermann und Schweinehirte.
