Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger, unter seinem Pseudonym Cordwainer Smith bekannt, war ein einflussreicher und begabter Science-Fiction-Autor. Er wurde am 11. Juli 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, geboren. Während Linebarger durch seine Science-Fiction-Arbeiten bekannt ist, hatte er auch eine vielseitige Karriere als Offizier der US-Armee, ein anerkannter Ostasien-Gelehrter und ein Experte für psychologische Kriegsführung.
Trotz der Anforderungen seiner anderen Karrieren gelang es Linebarger, sich als prominenten Science-Fiction-Autor zu etablieren. Bekannt ist er vor allem für sein Pseudonym Cordwainer Smith, aber er verwendete auch andere literarische Pseudonyme, wie Carmichael Smith, Anthony Bearden und Felix C. Forrest. Unter diesen Namen schrieb er Politthriller, Gedichte und Romane. Leider wurde Linebargers Schreibkarriere durch sein untimely Versterben in jungen Jahren abgeschnitten, aber seine Beiträge zum Science-Fiction-Genre hinterlassen haben eine anhaltende Wirkung. Seine Werke werden weiterhin von Fans und Gelehrten gefeiert und studiert.
