Alexander McCall Smith ist ein hochproduktiver und beliebter Autor, der besonders durch seine erfolgreiche "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency"-Reihe bekannt ist. Er wurde am 24. August 1948 in Bulawayo, Rhodesien (heute Simbabwe) geboren und ist britischer Staatsbürger, der in Schottland lebt.
McCall Smith ist der Autor mehrerer Reihen, darunter "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", "Professor Dr. Von Igelfeld Entertainment", "Isabel Dalhousie" und "44 Scotland Street" sowie weiterer Werke. Neben seinen Fiktionstiteln schreibt er auch medizinische Rechts- und Bioethik-Sachbücher. Vor seiner Schriftstellerkarriere war er Rechtsprofessor an der Universität von Botswana und Professor emeritus für medizinisches Recht an der Universität Edinburgh in Schottland.
Die "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency"-Reihe, die über zwanzig Millionen Exemplare verkauft hat, brachte McCall Smith großen Erfolg und ermöglichte es ihm, sich auf das Schreiben von Fiktion zu konzentrieren. Seine Werke wurden in über vierundvierzig Sprachen übersetzt und sind international Bestseller geworden. Neben seinen Reihen hat McCall Smith zahlreiche Einzeltitel verfasst, wie "La's Orchestra Saves the World", "Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey" und "Emma", eine Neubearbeitung des klassischen Romans von Jane Austen. Er hat auch mehr als dreißig Kinderbücher, akademische Werke und Kurzgeschichtensammlungen verfasst.
